Peter M. Wallace as president of the organization effective Jan. 1. The Alliance produces the national weekly ecumenical radio program, “Day 1.”

Wallace will continue as host and executive producer of “Day 1.” He joined the Protestant Hour organization in March 2001 and began hosting the program in 2004.

“Day 1″ has been broadcast every week for 67 years, formerly as “The Protestant Hour.” Featuring outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations, the program is distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas. The Day1.org website is a hub for mainline Christian content, offering blogs, audio, video, and other resources.

Wallace is a graduate of Marshall University in his hometown of Huntington, W.Va., and earned a master of theology degree from Dallas (Tex.) Theological Seminary. He is the author of eight books, including “Connected: You and God in the Psalms,” “Living Loved: Knowing Jesus as the Lover of Your Soul,” “Out of the Quiet: Responding to God’s Whispered Invitations,” “Psalms for Today,” and “TruthQuest Devotional Journal.” He blogs regularly on Huffington Post and Patheos.com, as well as on Day1.org.

Wallace is also the creator and host of “What Is God Saying to You Today?” – a series of 26 video meditations accessible on the “Call on Faith” smartphone application from Odyssey Networks, as well as on several websites. He resides in Atlanta, Ga., where he is a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.

The Alliance for Christian Media was formed in 2004 from the merger of the Protestant Hour, Inc. and the Episcopal Media Center. Wallace succeeds the Rev. Canon Louis C. Schueddig, who will continue as executive director of the organization until his retirement in 2013. Schueddig, an Episcopal priest, has served as president of the Episcopal Media Center and the Alliance for 30 years.

The board also elected Thomas Keuneke, chief financial officer of the Alliance, as vice-president.

The Episcopal Marketplace, a new online marketplace created in partnership with a wide array of Episcopal Church and other denominational partners, has officially launched as of the beginning of 2011. President of the Alliance for Christian Media, Rev. Canon Skip Schueddig, remarked that this represents a “new era” for our Episcopal Media division, “as we embrace our illustrious past while looking to build a future with our many content partners. It is truly an exciting time.” You can visit the Episcopal Marketplace here: http://www.episcopalmarketplace.org

The Marketplace represents the partnership of a number of content partners, including of course our award-winning Day1 radio content as well as newly announced partnerships with Episcopal Books and Resources, Episcopal Relief & Development, United Thank Offering and The Episcopal Church. Simon Cowart, Internet Technology Coordinator for the Alliance, says that this step will provide stronger national online presence for all the partners involved. “In a world where you are competing with everyone from Amazon to CafePress, it is essential that organizations like ours strengthen our efforts by coming together and combining our shared audiences online.”

We invite you to visit the Episcopal Marketplace and let us know what you think! Visit today at episcopalmarketplace.org.

Atlanta, GA, August 2, 2010 -Lilly Endowment Inc. of Indianapolis has granted the Alliance for Christian Media $150,000 to complete the restoration of Protestant Hour radio programs from 1945-1995. Today the program, now called Day1, airs weekly on 200 stations across America, in 8 countries outside the U.S., on the Internet at Day1.org, and in rotation on the American Forces Network.

The 2,620 programs in the collection include the best preachers from the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Episcopal Church. The program currently rotates among six mainline Protestant denominations that, in addition to the historic partners, includes the United Church of Christ and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

The historic recordings are now stored at the Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia, Athens. The programs, originally recorded on disc and tape formats, are rapidly deteriorating. Technical services to make them available for use today will be provided by Crawford Media Services of Atlanta.

The Alliance for Christian Media launched a funds campaign for the restoration two years ago. With the Lilly Endowment grant adding to funds already raised, the Alliance can now begin the process of restoration. Honorary Chair of the campaign is the Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long, Bandy Professor of Preaching at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.

Numerous church and seminary leaders have endorsed the effort, and the Alliance is organizing a task force to assist in creating ways the collection will be used educationally in colleges, universities and seminaries. It will also become a major feature on the Day1 web site.

Its use in training young preachers will be a high priority. The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Dean and President of the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, endorsed the project early on: “Preachers, pastors leaders and scholars in more remote areas of this country and beyond do not have easy access to libraries and other educational materials and rely heavily on the Web and other digital resources as a means for ongoing education and renewal.”

Renowned United Methodist preacher and professor at Duke Divinity School the Rev. Dr. William Quick has said, “The slice of history this preserves for posterity will be a source for future generations, at least for those persons seeking an understanding of the church during the latter half of the American Century.”

Alliance president and executive director, the Rev. Louis Schueddig, added, “This enormous resource will shed light on how religious leaders dealt with the issues of an entire generation, from Communism to Civil Rights, to women’s issues, and the growing secularization in society. Anyone of a certain age interested in religion will remember the Protestant Hour and when recalling great preachers of this generation will discover them in this collection.”

Dr. William H. Willimon, nationally known author and United Methodist bishop of the North Alabama Conference, added, “It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Protestant Hour archive is the best collection of the homiletical art in America, perhaps anywhere in the world. The prospect of having these sermons available in an accessible format is thrilling.”

Day1 executive producer and host Peter Wallace said, “We are deeply grateful for this important grant, and we are looking forward to making these priceless resources available for use by seminary and university professors, pastors and teachers, and lay audiences. They will have access not only to outstanding sermons and historical materials, but to timeless spiritual wisdom from the leading figures of the 20th century church.”

The mission of the Alliance for Christian Media is to be the leader in proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ through all existing and emerging communication media. Its goal is to enhance the voice of the historic mainline churches in America to connect the world of faith with the world in which people live. The Alliance is a national non-profit organization founded in 1945.

The Episcopal Media Center of Atlanta (a division of the Alliance for Christian Media) has produced a 3-disc audio book in association with Church Publishing Incorporated of DAY BY DAY: LOVING GOD MORE DEARLY by retired Los Angeles Bishop Frederick H. Borsch. A noted scholar, bishop, and former dean of the chapel at Princeton University, Borsch now serves as chair of Anglican Studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.

Day By Day, the popular song from Godspell, is based on a prayer from the Middle Ages composed by Richard of Chichester, a saint remembered for his humility, his perseverance in times of hardship, his care for the poor, and the strength and generosity of his faith. He lived during the reign of King Henry III of England.

The prayer: “Day by day, dear Lord, of you three things I pray: to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day,” gives shape to the book as Borsch offers an inspirational and meditative reflection on the life of Richard. The audio book was produced in the Atlanta studios of the Episcopal Media Center and includes music from several choirs and solo selections performed by Bishop Borsch’s son, Benjamin Borsch of Tampa, Fla.

Read by the author, the audio book looks at both the historical setting of Richard of Chichester in the 13th Century as well as the challenges facing us today to see, love and follow God. Borsch, who has authored 20 books, beautifully illuminates the challenges to faithfully follow Jesus as he reviews a life that was as complex and dangerous as any church leader in the Middle Ages.

The Episcopal Media Center has produced many audio books including recordings of works by Barbara Brown Taylor. The retail price of the audio book is $20. The book by the same name (101 pages) is available for $15 through Church Publishing Incorporated (ISBN 0-978-0-8192-2341-5). Visit our online store today to purchase Day by Day.

The Alliance for Christian Media in Atlanta has optioned the film rights to The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis to Beloved Pictures in Hollywood. The Alliance acquired the rights from the estate of C.S. Lewis in 1982 and has worked for years to see the story come to the big screen. The Alliance, formerly the Episcopal Media Center, is known for its Emmy Award-winning films for television including the original animated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the made-for-TV version of Shadowlands starring Claire Bloom. This represents their first foray into feature film production.

In The Great Divorce the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly English afternoon and embarks on an incredible voyage through Heaven and Hell. He meets a host of supernatural beings far removed from his expectations, and comes to some significant realizations about the nature of good and evil. It was published by C.S. Lewis in 1945 and is among his most popular works of fiction.

Beloved Pictures has attached David L. Cunningham to direct the film. His credentials include To End All Wars (Twentieth Century Fox). Bob Beltz, Special Advisor to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and the Academy Award-winning Ray is Executive Producer.

“This is a thrilling moment in the life of our ministry. We have been close to the works of C.S. Lewis since 1958 when his later published book The Four Loves was recorded by him in London for broadcast on The Protestant Hour (now Day1),” said President and Executive Director of the Alliance, Canon Louis “Skip” Schueddig,

Over the years the organization has contributed to religious media in numerous ways through its national radio and Internet program Day1, its pioneering television PSA’s and distribution of hundreds of media resources, including those of Trinity Television, to churches throughout the country.

For more information contact Canon Schueddig at lschueddig@day1.org or 800-229-3788.
